Item Description
13.75x15.5" panel of art board has ink and charcoal illustration by noted cartoonist and originator of Rube Goldberg Devices. 1958 cartoon "Defying The Birds Of Prey" depicts hand w/"U.S. Marines" tag held down over cage containing dove which has attached "Lebanon" tag. Cartoon deals w/Dwight Eisenhower's sending U.S. Marines into Lebanon to counter supposed subversive Communist anti-government activity supported by Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser who was being influenced in these efforts by Russia. Nasser is represented by a screeching vulture who is descending upon the dove, a much larger vulture head w/open beak labeled "Russia" appears behind Nasser. Goldberg has signed in lower left corner. Piece has been attractively matted w/Goldberg's name and home newspaper "The New York Journal American" and cartoon title at bottom. Mat is 15.5x20" and makes for an Exc. display.
