Item Description
10.75x14.5” softcover promoting upcoming Universal pictures. Publication starts off with message from Carl Laemmle and Carl Laemmle Jr. goes on to show photo images of Universal stars including John Boles (Frankenstein), Frances Dade, Bela Lugosi, ZaSu Pitts, David Manners (Dracula), Bette Davis, Helen Chandler (Dracula) and Edward Van Sloane (Frankenstein/Dracula/The Mummy). Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein director James Wale and Dracula director Tod Browning are pictured among director highlight page. Films featured include full-page ad for “Mystery Of Life” which shows nude men and women surrounded by dinosaurs and saber-tooth cat, “Lilies Of Broadway” with gorgeous vamps pulling strings of tuxedo-wearing men, another great page advertises “The Great Air Robbery” with early airplane dogfight. Towards end of publication is page reading “4 Sure Money Pictures For The Good Old Summertime” including “Dracula” directed by Tod Browning. Coming off the success of 1931’s Dracula, Universal surged ahead with horror films as indicated by beautiful full page ad for “The Murders In The Rue Morgue,” which would go on to star Bela Lugosi though he is not listed or pictured. Instead, creepy skeletal man is shown leering down at topless woman. Highlight of publication is full page beautiful color ad for upcoming Universal picture “Frankenstein.” This proposed poster art features large towering image of green man pulling people up from crowd and reads “… No Man Has Ever Seen His Like…No Woman Has Ever Felt His White-Hot Kiss…Surpasses And Thrills Even Dracula…World’s Greatest Hold-Over Picture For 1930….With Bela Lugosi (Dracula Himself)…As The Leading Spine-Chiller….As A Story It has Thrilled The World For Years.” While Lugosi was touted to play the Frankenstein Monster, he later decided against it fearing The Monster make-up and lack of lines would damage his career. The role later went on to make the career of Boris Karloff. Great content. Cover shows moderate aging with fade at margins and .75” circle stain just right of center. Pinch creases to spine. VG/Fine with Exc. contents. Additional photos online.
