Item Description
9.5x13.25” image area. Matted and framed. By Kellogg. Republican Party was founded 1854. Slogan at bottom reads “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Soil, Free Men.” 1856 Republican campaign slogan added “Fremont And Victory” to their party’s basic slogan. Greeley made his New York Tribune the party's unofficial national newspaper and fought extension of slavery. In 1856 he supported Edward Bates for Republican nomination for president, a move that weakened his old ally Seward. Sumner and Seward each had a vote on the first ballot which nominated John C. Fremont. Senator Sumner lead anti-slavery forces in Massachusetts. J.G. Whittier wrote abolitionist poetry. Senator Seward was important in early years of the party and had expected the presidential nomination in 1860. Upper corners have cream-colored restoration not affecting text. Graphics of eagle/shield/stars in center have color accent. “Kellogg” name appears at bottom left. Bottom right text at margin is unreadable, but likely Kellogg’s Connecticut address. Possibly the earliest Republican Party print. Overall print condition VG. Matted and framed.
