Item Description
2.25x7”. Text in total reads “Reception Committee/Akron/Sep’t 23rd, 1899” with three 7/8” dia. glossy sepia real photos of Nash, McKinley, Roosevelt with their names below. The Republicans had chosen George Nash as the gubernatorial candidate for Ohio in 1899. Then New York governor Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Ohio to headline a reception/rally to kick off the Nash campaign. This was one of 3 visits TR made to Ohio as governor of New York. He gave a speech to thousands from a grandstand in Grace Park to kick off the campaign. Roosevelt said the only way to uphold the honor of the American flag is to defeat the Philippines. Although Roosevelt became McKinley’s running mate in 1900, this ribbon cannot be considered a coattail as neither McKinley nor Roosevelt were running for office in 1899. Some gold luster loss to text. One pin hole by the “S” in the word “Sep’t.” Diagonal crease on TR photo at bottom left below collar (not affecting his image). An interesting/significant item considering the future of both McKinley and Roosevelt. Limited one day issue and only example we've seen. Extremely Fine.
