Item Description
8.5x16” stiff artboard has original pen and ink with water coloring illustration by Herriman. c. early 1900s specialty art was likely unpublished and is one of the earliest George Herriman original pieces of art known to exist. Herriman started his cartooning career in 1901, working for numerous weekly newspapers, eventually joining the “New York World” newspaper going on to create his acclaimed Krazy Kat comic strip. Art depicts high society lady holding ridiculously small umbrella as dog walks behind her, holding an American flag in its tail. Signed by Herriman in black ink “To The Office Pest From Geo. Herriman.” Additional French notation in ink “La Comtesse De Pimiento On The Bois D’ Boulange.” Board has even aging and scattered handling wear, mostly at upper left margin. 1/8” age spot along lower left margin. If desired, this could be matted out for a VF display. Great early Herriman art, easily among the earliest known to exist.
