Item Description
3.5x5.5”. Superb image from this legendary fight. Crisp photo shows both in boxing stance with legendary boxing promoter Tex Rickard standing in between with overflowing attendance in bkg. Fight took place July 4, 1910 and was billed as the fight of the century. Former undefeated heavyweight champion James J. Jeffries came out of retirement and said “I Am Going Into This Fight For The Sole Purpose Of Proving That A White Man Is Better Than A Negro.” Jeffries had not fought in six years and had to lose weight to get back to his championship fighting weight. An attendance of 22,000 people watched in 100 degree temperatures in downtown Reno, NV as Johnson defeated the former champion Jeffries. Johnson earned $225,000 and silenced the critics.
