Item Description
After his 1909 inaugural, Taft decided to escape the oppressive D.C. summers and from 1909 through 1912 he spent summers in the northeast seacoast town of Beverly, Mass. Thus the terms ‘summer White House’ and ‘summer Capital’ were born. This particular item shows the home he used in 1911-1912. The badge was used by Independent Order Of Odd Fellows for a convention badge. It is 5.75” tall and holds 1.75” cello with metal-covered reverse. The brass hanger with cello insert reads “Dept. Council, P.M./I.O.O.F.” The 3.5” ribbon has a small .25” edge split center left and a .5” hairline thread separation above “City.” Both defects are very minor and the ribbon remains structurally sound. In gold lettering it reads “Canton City/Of/Beverly/No. 67/July 17, 1912./Beverly/Mass.” The 1.75” real photo celluloid reads “Parametta Summer Home/President Taft, Beverly.” Cello has very shallow indent on the lower 30% just a little noticeable to the touch. Cello displays totally clean. A rare limited issue and the only example known to us.
