Item Description
1.25” superbly colored and designed button by Bastian with their backpaper which was first used 1907. This button is likely 1908 as the text reads “New Virginia Reel/Luna Park.” Luna Park was the second major amusement park at Coney Island and it opened in 1903. The Virginia Reel was an early style roller coaster characterized by spinning circular ‘tubs’ that zigzagged down a track, exactly as shown on this button. The Virginia Reel was designed by Henry Elmer Riehl, who named the ride after his daughter, Luna Virginia Riehl, and the first ride opened at Luna Park, Coney Island, in 1908 where Riehl was superintendant. Fabulous color and great subject matter make this among many collectors’ top ten all-time buttons. We’ve seen only 2 or 3 examples in 4 decades. This example is N. Mint and displays Mint.
