Item Description
Lot of 12. c. 1880s-1890s. First are four 3x4.75” A&P cards with the same text on back of each listing street locations of “The Great Atlantic And Pacific Tea Company Branch Houses In The US.” One has lt. creasing, others show lt. aging. Fine. Next are five 3x4” to 5.5”. Products include J.P. Coates, Fairbanks White Star (pre-Gold Dust Twin days), Clark’s Spool Cotton, Washburn’s Best Flour. One has lt. corner crease, 2 have spots of surface paper missing from backs from album mounting, rest show lt. wear. Overall Fine. Next is 8x8.5” A&P large card on card stock. Copyright 1884. Humorous illustration of fancy dressed man standing in front of wood frame building with sign that reads “Front Room To Let.” Older black couple stand at doorway with text below “Landlord-De Rooms Am Airy An De Place Quiet. Chilun? Why Bless Yer Soul, Dar Ain’t A Chile In De Neighborhood.” 17 smiling childrens’ faces appear above and around the house watching the action. A colorful and detailed illustration. .5” crease appears on right edge top to bottom with old clear tape repair on back. Back has text of A&P branch houses in the United States. Next is 3x5.75” folded calendar that opens to 12” long. 1894. Text at top reads “Coming Events Cast Their Shadows Before/To Insure A Successful Future Give The Babies Nestle’s Food.” Babies are seen hung in cloth baby pouches from hooks on long coat rack. Top of coat rack shows various items that represent each child’s future. i.e. granduation mortarboard and law book above child holding silver dollar representing the child’s future of being a lawyer. Also represented is Papal hat, top hat with gloves (child wears monocle), military officer helmet and sword, lady’s fancy hat, bag of money marked “$1,000,000 on bag, ink well (an author), a king’s crown, sheet music, paint brushes and a box of “Nestle’s Milk Food.” Above the only black child is a large question mark. Back of calendar has graphics with lengthy text of Nestle’s product. ©1884 with text “At The World’s Fair, Chicago, Nestle’s Milk Food Received The Highest Awards Given For Infant Foods, Medal And Diploma.” Old, clear tape repairs appear on back folds. Calendar VG. Last is 3.5” black figure with large drum showing Clark’s Spool Cotton. Figure is cut from larger trade card, has a crease on drumstick, VF as cut. An interesting lot.
