Item Description
At 3-13/16” this is the earliest and largest button we’ve ever seen picturing a presidential candidate although in this case we think it is from his run for governor in 1893 rather than his run for the presidency in 1896. We base this on the youthful image of him as well as the somewhat primitive nature of the button’s manufacturing characteristics. A narrow crimped tin edge holds the photographic paper image in place while the back is a solid piece of tin slotted and holding a very early safety pin-style pin made of brass. Couple of small surface dots off at his cheek, to the left of his mouth and 3 on his shirt collar and coat lapel. Most of these tiny white marks are 1/16” or less. Well over 95% of the surface is without this minor damage. Exceptionally large and the only example we’ve seen.
