Item Description
5.5x7x5.5” tall. c. 1900. Elaborate graphic/colorful paper illustrations with name above inside lid and one box end. Devil is depicted with wings, horns, mustache and goatee. He wears a cap that features a red-winged bat. Inside lid illustration has 2 dancing girls. Box top has same devil graphics in black impressed at center. Repeated “Black Crook” paper labeling appears around all edges. Name is in reference to famous 1866 Broadway musical comedy that ran for 30 years. The four hour long production included a large dance troupe of chorus girls in pink tights. Well done linen hinge repair on reverse. Outside box varnished at some point for preservation. Inside label unvarnished. Paper-lined box has repeat “Black Crook” name and trademark “Diamond Cigar Factory” printed labels. Moisture mark is visible on box interior bottom. Impressive graphics, color. Sturdy and displays VF.
