Item Description
3.5” wide by 6” from front to back of handle by 6.5” tall. c. 1890s. Wonderful German-made design. Front and top have letters “L.A.W.” (League of American Wheelmen). When viewed from the side, the body of the mug shows a large wheel with spokes and a pedal. The bottom of the handle has a smaller matching wheel. This design appears on both sides showing a stylized “Bone Rattler” high wheel bike. The symbol on the top with the letters is in a design of a spoke wheel with 3 wings attached at center. These wings divide the 3 letters “L.A.W.” Lid is attached with a nicely crafted pewter band and hinge attachment applied around handle top. Inside of mug is bright white heavy glaze. A 1” horizontal line appears 1” below the top rim. Beside this line reads “0.5 L.” (one-half liter). Much to the delight of the thirsty wheelman drinking from this mug, it has a 3.25” dia. lithopane bottom which when held to the light reveals a Victorian street scene of a man riding a high wheel bike about to fall on a well-dressed Victorian lady walking along the street. Youthful on-lookers are seen on both sides as well as buildings in the bkg. A delightful image, one which needs to be observed first-hand to be fully appreciated. Bottom of mug reads “Made In Germany/Musterschutz.” A 3/8x.5” long curved top segment of crest design on the lid was broken off and has been professionally repaired. Nearly invisible. Not obvious to an unsuspecting observer. In addition the smaller wheel at the base of the handle has a hairline in the glaze across the top and along one side. Despite these defects, still makes a great visual impression. Displays Exc. Overall a well-made, delightful memento from the days of high wheel cycling.
