Item Description
First is 5/8” enamel on brass lapel stud made by Greenduck of Chicago with threaded post and stud reverse. This reads “Worker’s Party Of America” with text surrounding hammer and sickle logo. Surface has very slight bend and end of hammer is missing tiny segment of white enamel with just a hairline extending onto the sickle. Still displays very nicely with much gloss. This party name was used 1921 to 1929 and then the name was changed to Communist Party USA. The second item is a 13/16” litho button black on very dark red picturing a man surrounded by text “Fight Against Imperialist War/Build The Party.” The man depicted is C.E. Ruthenberg who in 1916 was a Socialist senate candidate from Ohio and then around 1919 he helped form what became the Communist Party USA. In 1924 he was a Worker’s Party candidate for congress from the Ohio 20th district. Likely this button is related to that campaign. Upper left has small dent over word “Against” and far right edge has 1/16” single scratch. Only the second we’ve seen of the button and the first we’ve seen of the lapel stud. Very early and very rare Third Party pair.
