Item Description
10.5x13.5”. 76 pages. Published 1928 by J.H. Sears & Co. New York. Wilson was one of America’s first “Modernist” painters. Early in his career (1915), he was a teacher of painting and drawing at Columbia University. Serving as a Lieutenant in the first World War, Wilson returned from France (1919) to document his experiences in his highly acclaimed war paintings for which he was recommended for the Nobel Prize. The book contains 24 color plates printed by “The Societe Anonyme Des Arts Graphiques.” The 24 color plates are in various sizes (many 14.7x17”) and mounted to the right-hand page. Titles appear on the left. Many of the illustrations are dynamic, horrific and brilliant, some all at the same time. Dust jacket shows considerable wear/tears. Good. The hardcover book is bound in linen buckram with a still brilliant gold luster embossed center. Aging appears around edges, but cover remains tight. VG. The front of the book has two essays of appreciation by Alexander Wollcott and Henry McBride. The plates and contents show very minor wear, remain VF/Exc. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
