Item Description
First is a 1.25” with words “Burn Baby Burn!” Second is 1.5” reading “Support Black Revolutionaries/Free Bill Epton Now!” Epton was Vice-Chairman of the Progressive Labor Party until his incarceration for incitement to violence in 1964 making him the first person convicted of criminal anarchy since the Red Scare of 1919. His crime was basically saying the three words “Burn, Baby, Burn.” The events started July 16, 1964 when a New York policeman killed a young African American drug dealer. This ignited days of demonstrations and eventually riots in Harlem. Epton and his group hung posters reading “Wanted For Murder – Gilligan The Cop” throughout the city which caused the administration to declare a state of emergency prohibiting public demonstrations. Most reformist leaders went along with the ban but Epton and his group attempted a peaceful rally and when they began to march Epton was arrested for “criminal anarchy.” He was found guilty and received a one-year prison sentence. Both buttons are essentially Mint.
