Item Description
Each is 1-3/16” dia. with cork liner on the interior. While all 7 players known are here, there are 2 distinct varieties. The “Mickey Mantle” and one of the “Yogi Berra” have large text reading “Me For Yoo-Hoo.” The other 5 have small text at top reading “Bottled By Bireley’s Beverage Co. Phila. Pa.” These consist of Yogi Berra holding a product bottle, Whitey Ford, Tony Kubek, Gil McDougald and Bill Skowron. While many sets picture players on the underside, we believe this is the only baseball or football bottle cap set with the players depicted on the top. As such, they suffered some damage when the top was opened with a metal opener. Mantle has about 5 tiny scratch lines and a slight indent. Others with a notable indent are Ford and Kubek plus McDougald which also has some silver color off the right edge and two hairline streaks. Others all show some varying degrees of scratching or dotting on the silver paint but this would certainly be typical for the vast majority of examples. Yogi Berra had a relationship with the product going back to the 1950s and he appeared in commercials and at supermarket promotions and at one time he was actually vice-president of the company owning a large amount of stock. In his biography Yogi wrote “One Time I Was In The Office And The Phone Rang. I Always Answer A Ringing Phone. The Woman Asked If Yoo-Hoo Was Hyphenated. I Said, ‘No Ma’am, It’s Not Even Carbonated’.”
