Item Description
1.25” with W&H backpaper used only in 1897. We believe the button was made at that time in anticipation of its use at spring opening of the Trans-Mississippi 1898 Exposition. Button depicts Caucasian fair visitor in coat, tie and hat seated on a kneeling camel while in the bkg. is an Arab man in a robe waving his hand against backdrop of a building entrance-way. Captioned below “Gentlemen, Look!” Captioned at top with the name of the exhibit as well as the name “G. Akoun.” Gaston Akoun became famous World’s Fair promoter and his first exhibit was at the Columbian Expo in 1893 with title similar to this 1898 button, “A Street In Cairo” featuring snake charmers, camel rides and the scandalous dancer known as Little Egypt. Akoun not only brought his exhibit to the Trans-Mississippi Exhibition but in 1901 he was also manager of the Pan-American Midway’s exhibit Streets of Cairo. His career continued at Jamestown in 1907 with exhibit “Beautiful Orient” and “Streets Of Cairo” located at the western end of the Warpath. Button’s reverse has 2 tiny dots of age by the collet but o/w in essentially Mint condition. Only example we know of. Also the only button we know of to name the “Streets Of Cairo” exhibit.
