Item Description
Smith was a famous British evangelist, actually born in a gypsy tent in 1860, 6 miles northeast of London, and he conducted tours throughout Britain and the United States for over 70 years. During World War I he ministered under the auspices of Y.M.C.A. to British troops in France and often visited front lines for which King George VI made him a member of the Order of the British Empire. This rare pair of buttons are for his visits in North America. First reads “Gipsy Smith’s Choir/Toronto 1909.” This is 1” and has W&H backpaper. Second also with W&H backpaper is 1.25” and reads in full “Gipsy Smith Evangelistic Campaign/Usher/1st Regt. Armory/Jan. 9-30, 1921.” Both are Exc. and display Mint. Only examples we’ve seen.
