Item Description
3.5” tall tin litho with 4.5” dia. Original wire handle. ©1896 R.F. Outcault. Front features wood sign reading “Yellow Kid,” a pair of pails reading “Yellow Kid” hang from nails at either corner of the sign. On top of sign are birds who say “Mickey Says Dis Pails A Peach See/Buy The Yellow Kid Pail From Mickey On The Beach.” On either side of the sign are full figure images of the Yellow Kid, one of him in coat which reads “I Am A Peach See.” He holds top hat and riding crop and wears spats with no shoes while the other depicts him in shirt reading “I’m De Only Pebble On The Beach” and he holds a cane and cigar. Back of the pail has 8 images (4 different), 3 depicting him with sand pail and shovel and one of him with sheet music rolled up and using it as a horn. Bottom of pail has embossed elephant to be used as a sand mold. Does come with what appears to be original or at least vintage shovel with wood handle and yellow painted blade. Moderate aging and small trace of paint wear. VG. Interior of pail has moderate wear and small scattered spots of surface rust. Underside of pail shows only slightest trace of oxidation. Outer illustrated surface has moderate aging to the paint and scattered tiny paint nicks as well as some tiny oxidation spots. Trace of oxidation on extreme bottom rim. However, all images remain bold and distinct. Few minor indents really only noticeable to the touch. Overall VG. Rarest and earliest character sand pail we know of and only the second we’ve offered in our 44 years.
