Item numbers 1187 through 2776 in auction 200
Item Description
6.25x9-1/8” stiff scratch board has pen and India ink illustration. Scene depicts man approaching sleeping woman in ancient Egyptian, Cleopatra-like outfit who reclines on Egyptian-style furniture as statue of lion looks on. Penciled title at bottom reads “Sleep Of The Ages.” Noted as one of the most famous fantasy artists of the 20th century, Finlay produced large quantities of work with meticulous scratch board techniques, involving black ink applied to white board and Finlay would scratch away the ink to reveal his images. Providing work for science fiction pulp “Amazing Stories” and horror/fantasy pulp “Weird Tales,” Finlay quickly became a fan favorite. Finlay has “signed” in the shadows of his art at lower right corner. Scratch board has slight warp and margins have rough edges. Staple holes at left margin with 4” crease at lower right corner. Art could be matted for a N. Mint display. Amazingly detailed. Also comes with “Virgil Finlay…A Portfolio Of Illustrations,” a 9x12” publication by Nova Press ©1953 Virgil Finlay. Single-sided pages showcase Finlay’s intricate art with several fantastic, supernatural and mythic illustrations. Attention to detail is astounding. Covers have lt. aging at margins with some dust soiling but o/w Exc. with N. Mint pages.
