Item Description
10x13” softcover promoting films for the upcoming 1932-1933 season. Beautifully illustrated with wonderful full color painting. First 2 pages are letters from studio heads Carl Laemmle and Carl Laemmle Jr. Director page shows James Whale, John Ford, Robert Florey and others. Great World War I flying ace film “Flight Commander” page with man in aviator helmet with reflections of 2 women in his goggles as flaming dog fights take place on either side of his head. Two-page spread for upcoming classic horror film “The Invisible Man” that was directed by James Whale. Of particular note, text reads in part “…And Remember, The Invisible Man Will Be Played By None Other Than That Master Of The Impossible In Make-Up—Boris Karloff.” After the success of Universal’s “Frankenstein,” Karloff was their go-to man in terms of monsters. Ultimately, Karloff did not play the Invisible Man, the role going to Claude Rains but this ad promises what might have been with great image of silhouetted Invisible Man stalking cowering woman. Another wonderfully illustrated full page ad for James Whale’s “The Old Dark House” which did star Boris Karloff featuring amazing image of terrified woman looking at malevolent image of man who looks like Karloff, though not as Karloff was depicted in the final film. Another great ad for Zasu Pitts film “The Substitute Bride.” Two-page ad for “Pagan River” shows river canoe party being threatened by alligators, leopards and lion. Another great full page ad for “Black Pearl” which features man diving to rescue woman who is tangled in the arms of a giant octopus as man in diving suit looks on. Two-page ad for “Cagliostro The Great Imposter” which would later become the horror classic “The Mummy” starring Boris Karloff who has nice large image at left of him staring at woman lit by candle. “He Lives Today….3000 Years Old, Yet Appearing 35!...He Preys On The Souls Of Beautiful Women!...The World and The People In It Are His Toys!...He Has The Power To Create…And Destroy!” Film goes on to promote Karloff as the "'Frankenstein’ Monster Himself." Two-page spread for “Zeppelin” with nice large image of Zeppelin with inset image of man punching another man through Zeppelin door. Two-page spread promoting Tom Mix and his horse Tony in 6 upcoming films. Cover has handling wear with color rubs and pinch creases at spine. A few scattered moisture marks at top of covers. VG/Fine with Exc. contents. Limited distribution. One of the most well-produced exhibit books we’ve seen. Amazing content, beautifully illustrated. Additional photos online.
