Item Description
This premium was briefly issued in late 1939-early 1940 in Superman and Action Comics and obtained by recruiting 3 friends to join the Supermen of America Club. This is one of the very earliest Superman premiums. Large 5.5" dia. This was originally advertised as a “Superman Emblem.” Unlike other similar patches which are just felt, this is made of 2 thin layers of felt and sandwiched between these layers is a thin sheet of cardboard which gives the patch a high degree of stiffness although it remains flexible if pressure is applied. Front has choice silk-screened design featuring classic image of Superman breaking chains surrounded by text “Supermen Of America/Action Comics.” Overall condition is quite exceptional. Typical slight aging to the white felt on both front and blank reverse. Extreme rim edge from 2 o’clock to 4 o’clock has a few tiny flakes of white felt gone, couple of tiny 1/8” tears and a minor 1” crease with crack in the fabric. There is also an exceedingly faint 3” crease running diagonally from the word “Of” down to the “E” in “AMERICA.” All of these defects are really only noticeable upon close inspection, silk-screened design remains bold, distinct and shows no wear at all. Overall still VF. In light of the recent extraordinary sales of Action Comics #1, it is important to note that there are far fewer of this patch known (only about 7 or 8) as opposed to existing copies of Action Comics #1. Listed in The Price Guide To Pop Culture Memorabilia by Ted Hake with values in Fine of $5,500 and N. Mint $11,000. One of the rarest and most desirable Superman premiums.
