Item Description
1.25” with W&H backpaper used only 1896-97 depicting cute young girl in hat with her name below “’Dottie Dimple’.” Outer edge names the product “O.P. Ramsdell Sweet & Co. Buffalo, N.Y./Children’s Shoes.” Button is one of the very earliest to advertise a product brand taking its name from a fictitious character. In this case the character was created by Rebecca Sophia Clarke, known as the “Dickens” of the nusery. She began writing in the 1860s and was most famous for her “Little Prudy” series from 1864-1868 but this was immediately followed by her “Dotty Dimple” series in 1868-1869. Her character’s first name ends in a “y” rather than “ie” as on the button but we believe this was simply the shoemaker’s attempt to avoid legal issues. Clarke was one of the first authors to write stories for children depicting them realistically rather than with impossibly perfect manners and behavior. Button is N. Mint and displays Mint. Rare.
