Item Description
This sword has 28” blade and overall is 34.5”. One side of blade at base has imprint of maker “Ames Mfg. Co. of Chicople, Mass.” Opposite side is stamped “U.S. /AHC/1862.” The hand guard is stamped “AHC.” The brass was cleaned years ago. The blade is extremely bright with only a couple .5” dia. or smaller extremely minor areas of non-glossy surface with microscopic pitting. The blade edge has about 2 dozen tiny nicks just deep enough to catch a fingernail run along the edge. Only about half of these are barely visible to the eye. The brass handle has just a few tiny marks on the narrow side of the blade guard. Probably by sword grading standards, a “Fine” example but it displays N. Mint. The leather scabbard with brass mounts (faint AHC at tip) has two horizontal breaks in the leather on the front surface 6.5” up from bottom and 11” down from the top. On the opposite side, leather at these 2 areas shows wear but remains intact and will stay that way if significant care is taken in handling and/or in placing sword in or out of scabbard.
