Item Description
The Copperheads were Democrats in the Northern United States who opposed the American Civil War, wanting an immediate peace settlement with the Confederates. Republicans starting calling anti-war Democrats “Copperheads,” likening them to the poisonous snake. The "Peace" Democrats (as they called themselves) accepted the label, but for them the copper “head” was the likeness of Liberty, which they cut from copper pennies and proudly wore as badges. McClellan was nominated in 1864 to oppose Lincoln. This is a stiff 2.5x4” card with reverse name of issuer reading “Edwards’/Photograph/Printing Establishment/No. 1338 Chestnut Street.” The card front with vignette of early steam locomotive and graphic use of many different type fonts reads in full “You Are Respectfully Invited To Accompany The Peacemakers/On An/Excursion/1863 (locomotive vignette) 1863/To A Quite Retreat On Salt Marsh/Near Atlantic/In A Place Well Adapted For Copper Heads, But No Other/Kind Of SNAKES.
