Item Description
4x7” stereo view photo has blank reverse and front that shows a street scene and buildings in Chicago. The title is printed in the image, “Chicago Clubhouse, Chicago.” In the foreground is a tall building with a banner across the third floor level that reads “Democratic Headquarters.” The last 2 letters of the word “Headquarters,” are not seen in the view. A jugate banner of the 2 candidates Samuel J. Tilden & Thomas A. Hendricks running for president and vice-president is shown attached to the second floor front of the building. It is only possible to read part of the last name of Tilden and none of the name Hendricks. Also, it is not possible on the image to visually recognize the candidates. The words “Artistic Stereoscope Views” are printed in the left and right margins. The actual photo on this stereo view would have been taken between the Summer and Fall of 1876. It is, however, possible that this photo could have been published by the “Artistic Stereo Views” as late as the 1890s. The reason is that the company “Artistic Stereo Views” was active in the 1890s and they are known to have pirated early views from other companies. It is likely that this view was published after 1876 which was the date when the view was first published by Lovejoy and Foster of Chicago. Extremely clean condition. Just the most subtle age traces.
