Item Description
The cane is thick tapering wood 33.25” long with woodgrain finish and .25” dia. random accent dots in black. Finish shows general use and a brass tip is missing from the bottom. At the top two pieces of cast iron form the handle with a screw and recessed square bolt joining the iron halves to the wood cane. Iron front is designed like a Liberty head coin with 13 stars surrounding the raised profile plus date below of “1896.” Iron reverse has raised text “Garland/Sound Money/Club/Organized Sept. 26th 1896.” The iron handle is 4.25” tall and the “coin” diameter is 2.5x.5” thick. The finish is combination of original black mixed with dark brown surface oxidation. The cane was almost certainly produced for and by employees who made cast iron stoves in Detroit. Garland Stoves were built by the Michigan Stove Co. founded 1872 which became the Detroit Stove Co. in 1907. The Garland brand achieved great fame by exhibiting a 15 ton hand-carved oak wood replica stove at the 1893 Columbian Exposition. Garland remains a premium brand today. Fine and Rare. One of the few campaign canes to utilize cast iron. Only example we’ve seen.
