Item Description
On November 24, 1963 at 11:21 AM, CST, as John F. Kennedy’s accused killer Lee Harvey Oswald was being transferred from the Dallas Jail, he was shot and killed before a stunned nationwide TV audience by Jack Leon Ruby. Ruby owned a striptease nightclub and this is one of his personal 2x3.5” business cards. It reads in full: “The Carousel Club/1312-1/2 Commerce Dallas Texas/Your Host…Jack Ruby/RI7-2362…/Continuous Shows!/Glamorous Girls! Girls! Girls!/Open To 2 AM Nitely.” The card includes an unauthorized image of a Femlin, created in 1955 by Leroy Neiman when publisher Hugh Hefner decided the TV Party Jokes page of Playboy Magazine needed a visual element. The name derives from “Female” and “Gremlin.” The Femlins are portrayed as sprites wearing only opera gloves, stockings and high heels. By 1963, Femlins appeared on merchandise such as a set of 4 plaster statues which retailed then at $7.50 each and today can exceed $1,000 each. Jack Ruby artifacts and documents occasionally come to market, most notably his assassination-worn Fedora hat which exceeded $53,000 in a Heritage 2009 auction, but this is the only example of Ruby’s business card known to us. One corner tip has minute crease under 1/16” and rest is Mint.
