Auction #201 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1408 in auction 201
Item Description
First is paper poster 18x24.5” titled “One World.” Printed at lower left “H. Burkhardt 1972.” Burkhardt was a Swiss-born American abstract expressionist who immigrated to New York in 1924. He shared Arshile Gorky’s studio from 1928 to 1937 and then moved to Los Angeles. His Wickipedia bio includes: “When He Moved To Los Angeles In 1937, Burkhardt Represented The Most Significant Bridge Between New York And Los Angeles In That His Paintings Of The 1930s Are Part Of The Genesis Of American Abstract Expressionism. He Brought With Him Many Of The Nascent Ideas Of Abstract And Abstract Expressionist Painting That Have Been Swirling Among New York Artists, Foremost Among Them, Arshile Gorky And Willem de Kooning. Burkhardt’s Ability To Evoke Compelling Works Of Human Empathy Has Lead Several Of Today’s Preeminent Art Historians And Critics To Regard Many Of His Paintings To Be Among The Major Works Of Our Time. It Has Been Argued, For Example, That The Art He Created In Response To War – Beginning With The Spanish Civil War In The Late 1930s And Continuing Through World War II, Vietnam And Desert Storm – Represents A Body Of Work Unprecedented In The History Of Art. In 1992, Burkhardt Was Honored As The Recipient Of The Lifetime Achievement Award By The American Academy And Institute Of Arts And Letters.” Small trace of age on reverse. N. Mint and displays Mint. Only example we’ve seen. Second is colorful 23x30” paper poster reading “America Needs McGovern/He Can Put It Together.” Image includes Nixon with “X” over his face. Art includes name “Rivers” and bottom edge reads “Photo By Malcolm Varon Printed By Color Craft Offset, Inc. New York, New York.” Couple very minor and small creases at top and bottom edges. Totally clean. N. Mint. Scarce. Pair
