Item Description
5.25x7.25” overall. 4x5.5” image area. Howe is today best known as the writer of the Battle Hymn Of The Republic. She published poetry, plays and travel books as well as many articles. She became active in the women’s rights movement later in life, playing a prominent role in several suffrage organizations and in women’s clubs. c . 1900. Imprint reads “Copyright By J.E. Purdy/Boston/No. 3.” “Purdy” imprint appears below photo in silver luster. Red ink notation at bottom photo edge reads “©J.E. Purdy/Ok To Use If Copyright Notice Is Printed/J. Hoch-July 1912.” Purdy died in 1910 and this cabinet photo was likely used for a publication after her death. Newspaper archive pencil notations on mat indicate this was used for publishing purposes. Pencil note at upper right reads “Engraver: Adjust Cut Mark At Top And At Side That Reproduction Will Be Exactly 1-1/2” W. 2” H.” Bkg. has been painted and margin marks are indicated for publication purposes. Her name appears in pencil on both the front and back. Margin wear/surface dust on front and back does not affect clarity and quality of the image.
