Item Description
3.5x5”. Embossed illustration with text “To My Valentine/I’m A Socialist/Will You Be One?/Free Drinks/--(free) Money/--(free) Love.” Illustration by William Ellam, a well-known British artist of comic cards. His stylized name appears at bottom left. No stamp or message, but has Feb. 14, 1911 cancellation and inked address. An example of this Socialist Valentine postcard is featured on the cover of Ed Sullivan/Paul Buhle’s “Images Of American Radicalism.” The term “Free Love” appears as early as the 1820s-1830s and became associated with Socialism in the 1850s and 60s. Victoria Woodhall in her efforts to run for president was accused of being involved in “free love.” This postcard has edge wear but text and illustration remain clean and bright. VF.
