Auction #201 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1408 in auction 201
Item Description
13.5x19”. Card stock. Text on colorful feather at left reads “Peace In Vietnam/End Poverty/Stop Police Harrassment/18 Year Old Vote/Legalize Marijuana/Rent Control/Black Power/Student Power/Fight Racism/Tax The Rich/Plant Trees & Flowers/Vote April 4th.” In early 1967 Rubin tried a different tactic for change from within the system by running for Mayor of Berkeley. Started as a lark, once into it he turned serious and in a very issue-oriented campaign, spoke at shopping centers and shook hands on street corners. He wore a suit and tie and issued a 24-page booklet that used a semi-psychedelic format to present 24 carefully worded, well reasoned, one-page stands on local and national issues. He was sorely disappointed when he finished a distant second in a 4-man race (he had 22% of the vote, the winner had 69%). Disillusioned by his failure to change things from within, he turned his back on electoral politics with a vengeance and for a long time scorned, as only one who has been there could, the cooperative powers of the American political system. Evenly tanned. Multiple tack holes, mostly at margins of the 4 corners and 2” crease upper left corner. Great graphics/color. An important poster of the 1960s and extremely rare local issue. Fine. This consignment is the same item that realized $650 plus premium in Auction #195. See 1972 Zippie Youth International Party button #486. Conservative opening.
