Auction #201 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1408 in auction 201
Item Description
This 7/8” sepia features an illustration of teddy bear walking and holding flagstaff with flag reading “I Am ‘It’.” At lower right is the artist’s name “Berryman,” the creator of the 1902 cartoon depicting TR showing compassion for a small bear cub which then inspired New York store owner Morris Michtom to create a new toy called the Teddy Bear. The design of this bear is essentially identical to the bear on stilts which is part of the button design by Berryman in 1904 showing marching full figures of Theodore Roosevelt and Fairbanks. On that button, the bear carries a flag reading “Four More Years Of Theodore.” An example of that button sold for over $16,000 in 2009 at Heritage Auctions. While undated, this button by its design and construction plus “I Am It” slogan and presence of “Baltimore Badge & Novelty Co.” backpaper also dates to 1904. Extreme right edge of button has just the faintest trace of a gray smudge which is under the celluloid. Highly glossy surface. N. Mint and unlisted. From the Morry Greener Collection.
