Item Description
4.75x4.75x3.25” tall c. 1869 wooden box has highly detailed gutta percha lid showing a double-masted sailing ship flying the United States flag. Ship represents the iconic yacht "America" for which the cup race is named. The schooner won the International Sailing Trophy, then known as the Royal Yacht Squadrons 100 Guinea Cup on August 22, 1851 over the Royal Yacht Squadron’s 53 mile regatta around the Isle of White. Legend has it that while watching the race Queen Victoria asked who was second and received the famous reply “There Is No Second, Your Majesty.” Box has simulated woodgrain finish around sides. Lid has one chip at back rail. Inserted glue applied to strengthen back side at top can be seen from underneath back rail. Painted grain, which is unusual for a collar box of this type. Has some chipping or scratches. Light aqua blue paper liner inside lid is chipped and worn. Box is Fine. Gutta percha top is Exc. Elaborate and highly detailed image of one of our country’s finest sailing ships.
