Item Description
17.25x26.26” wood frame with 16-1/8x25.25” opening revealing elaborate fabric referring to matadors of the 1916 season. Left corner has 7x13.25” image area with nice photo of Jose Gomez Ortega (1895-1920) commonly known as Joselito el Gallo, or Gallito, a Spanish matador in the early 20th century. He was born in Gelves, Seville Province. His father was the matador Fernando Gomez Garcia, known as El Gallo. He was the younger brother of the matador Rafael Gomez Ortega, also known as “El Gallo.” Joselito was the youngest bullfighter to receive the title of matador, at the age of 17. Joselito was fatally gored in the ring at the age of 25. Gomez is widely considered to be the most famous bullfighter of all time. Silk printed in Madrid by R. Velasco. Fabric has extensive list of fights, bulls, kills, etc. along with other statistics. Exc. as framed. Wonderful design and graphics. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
