Item Description
Henry A. Wallace, future Secretary of Agriculture, Vice President and 1948 candidate of the Progressive Party, was born on a farm in Iowa in 1888. In 1895, his grandfather founded a weekly agricultural newspaper called “Wallaces’ Farmer.” Henry became the editor in 1916. This 1.25” button dates from a few years earlier, probably around 1904 given the covered tin back with fixed horizontal bar pin, Pictured is presumably the publication’s founder dressed in suit and hat riding a beautiful horse and carrying a staff with banner “Good Farming/Clear Thinking/Right Living.” Subtly depicted in the bkg. is a huge army of additional men on horseback. Primary text around the rim is “Join My Club/Wallaces’ Farmer.” Couple of spots of barely perceptible darkening on the far left side, nothing dark enough to call a stain, just a subtle difference in tone of the cream bkg. Button displays glossy and Exc. Only second example we’ve seen. See following license plate and 3 related buttons. From the Morry Greener Collection.
