Item Description
c. 1898. 6.5” dia., 7.25” tall overall in shape of a dock mooring post. Made by Wheeling Pottery Co. Top of lid has image of smiling Admiral Dewey. Front of jar has graphics of ship with text “Dewey’s Flag-Ship, The Cruiser Olympia" Reverse side has Dewey crest with text “Steam Ahead And Follow Me” with 2 furled flags on sides and eagle at top with date of May 1, 1898. Sides of lid have small relief stars and sides of bottom have small relief rope designs. Side with ship image has barely noticeable 2” hairline which blends well with mast rigging image. Extreme top edge of lid appears to have gold gilt accent color, most of which is gone. Overall Fine/VF appearance. Wonderful design. First we’ve seen in our 44+ years.
