Item Description
5-7/8x8.5” herald on newsprint. Could only be ordered by theater owners via the pressbook to promote the 1943 “Batman” 15-chapter Columbia serial. The pressbook describes the herald as follows: “Straight From A Cartoonist’s Pen Comes This Mighty Comic Strip Herald…” Herald opens to 6x18” and features a 6-panel bw comic strip adaptation of the serial’s storyline. “Based On The Batman Comic Magazine Feature Appearing In Detective Comics And Batman Magazines With Lewis Wilson - Douglas Croft - J. Carrol, Naish - Shirley Patterson. Screen Play By Victor McLeod, Leslie Swabacker, Harry Fraser. Produced by Rudolph C. Flothow. Directed By Lambert Hillyer. A Columbia Chapter Play.” Comic strip shows villain Dr. Daka, the head of a Japanese spy and sabotage ring. Batman appears in last 2 panels, his shadow in fourth panel and Robin fights alongside him in fifth. Front of panel features classic illustration as seen on the cover of “Batman” comic book #9 from Feb./Mar., 1942. Herald has been slightly trimmed and separated as paper grew fragile from multiple folding and un-folding over the decades. Archival tape repair to second piece along left margin. .25” chip off top corner of second page. Technically VG, but still a great piece to frame with 2-sided glass and would display VF. Rare and first we’ve offered. From the Saul Ferris Collection.
