Item Description
This group of 5 items is from 1896 and consists of 2 pinbacks, one is a dupe with a few small stain marks while the other is essentially Mint and both read “’Yellow Fellow Club’/Trademark.” The 3 lapel studs are each 7/8”. Two of these are N. Mint, displaying Mint and one with the black diagonal stripe has fade plus stain marks on the rim. One of these studs reads “Journal Examiner Yellow Fellow Trans-Continental Relay Souvenir.” These buttons in general, and this button in particular, relate to the E.C. Stearns Bicycles made in Syracuse which featured bright orange enamel coloration and their racing riders also wore orange uniforms. The race itself was a publicity stunt in conjunction with the Hearst newspapers “Examiner” in San Francisco and “Journal” in New York City. The 1896 race garnered fabulous publicity for both the newspapers and the Stearns Bicycle Co. A historic group with 3 of the 5 items in essentially Mint condition.
