Item numbers 1 through 1408 in auction 201
Item Description
These advertising specialty items were extremely popular in the 1930s. They consist of a button-like celluloid with a metal reverse holding a stiff wire which is looped at the top for suspension and with the opposite end curved upward and ending in a sharp point so that it can pierce “bills” or other paper. While each of the following has some damage, for the most part they still display very cleanly. Overall each is about 7” to 8” tall. The celluloid piece on the vertical ovals is 2.75” tall. The largest round celluloid is 3.5” and the 2 smaller are each 2.5”. Subjects and general conditions as follows: FDR issued by “Daily & Sunday Times.” About a half dozen long craze lines but only stain is small dark mark over 2 letters of “Sunday” with tiny flake of celluloid missing at this point. For a better example of FDR, see item #374. Second is for “Carolina Life Insurance Co.” Three long craze lines but extremely clean. Third for “Hilgemeier’s Hams-Bacon-Lard” is not crazed but does have a little scattered tan age spotting mostly on the lower third. Fourth is for the “Morris Isaac & Sons Mail Order House” in Cincinnati. Again, this one is not crazed although red lettering is slightly faded and bottom 20% has some scattered but light age dots. Fourth is for “Alamo Creamery Butter” from San Antonio, Texas. Surface is covered in very tiny craze lines and cream bkg. is a little uneven in the color tone. Still nice color and a rare item. Sixth is for the “Stork’s Nest And Specialty Shop.” Has sepia real photo of mother and young baby although celluloid has extensive tiny craze lines. Celluloid is also a little deeper yellow tone over the white areas than when originally produced in the 30s. The wire has a few extra bends as well. Seventh is for “Havacup Coffee” showing product package of Pittsburgh Pa. firm. About a half dozen scattered craze marks but showing very little. Eighth is for “Walker’s Austex Products” which include “Mexene Chili Powder Seasoning, Chili Con Carne And Tamales With Chili Gravy.” Cello has 2 long vertical craze lines that show little but does have a little tan tone around the perimeter. Another interesting piece from Texas, this time from Austin. All of these are quite scarce and still worthy of display with an opening bid that reflects the condition issues.
