Item Description
Button is 3.5” stamped on back by maker Emress of NYC. It is pinned to a ruffled fabric rosette bringing its total diameter to 5.25”. While relatively common as a 1.25” button, this large real photo version is exceedingly rare. It reads “The New Frontier Man Of The Year/Astronaut John Glenn.” It honors Glenn as the 5th person in space and the first American to orbit the Earth which he did aboard Friendship 7 on Feb. 20, 1962, circling the globe 3 times during a flight lasting just about 5 hours. His ticker tape parade, for which this button was likely produced, was reminiscent of Lindbergh’s and his fame and political attributes were noted by the Kennedys, becoming a personal friend of the Kennedy family and a symbol for JFK’s “New Frontier.” Cello has couple of very st. hairlines in reflected light and a very tiny rub about 1/8”square on bkg. at right center but just barely showing as a pale gray mark in certain light angles. Overall condition remains Exc.
