Item Description
1.25” button with 1897 W&H backpaper. Top curl carries issuer’s name “High Admiral Cigarette” and below is the slogan “Don’t Bother Me.” In the Paul Muchinsky “Boxing Pin-Back Buttons” book as #14 and he notes that John L. Sullivan refused to fight Jackson ostensibly because of Jackson’s race. Because of his race, Jackson was never allowed to fight for a world championship title. The button’s caption likely refers to Jackson’s exclusion from participating in the quest for the title. Lower left side edge has trivial 1/16” cello cut not showing at all from the front which displays Mint. The first button ever to depict an African American boxer. Our Hake book example exceeded $350 in Auction #196. The button is a mate to another by the same company picturing Fitzsimmons with text “Am I In It.” From thee Richard Merkin Collection. Comes with Hake's COA. Rare.
