Item Description
This silver luster metal plate measures 2-7/8x3-7/8” of the size and in the format of a belt buckle although a metal piece on the reverse makes it uncertain how this was used. Very nicely engraved image of a horse pulling a rider on a high wheel sulky just ready to pass an observation tower with tiny images of 4 people and with a flag flying from the top pole. Likely the item dates from the 1880s-1890s and item came from an estate north of Harrisburg, Pa. whose family member once raced sulkies. Most likely the buckle is silver plated. The back of the piece has a smaller piece of metal soldered on although one solder dot at upper left corner has given way. This metal piece has 2 small cut-outs below and has 2 vertical ridge lines which do form an opening of sorts where a piece might be inserted but if that were done, the front of the piece would be in vertical position rather than in horizontal position. Quite early and interesting. Also see following related item.
