This club started in 1897 as the St. Louis Field Club with nine holes. In 1959 Robert Trent Jones designed a new course and in 1965 it became the youngest course to host a U.S. Open. Gary Player won the event, the first foreigner since Tell Ray in 1920. The event was also the first final round played on a Sunday and the first to be televised in color.
