Item Description
1-5/16x1-7/8” thin embossed brass, without any fastener on the reverse, die-cut in the shape of the letter “H” for the candidate Hindenburg. Item has at its center the name “Hindenburg” beneath the German word “Wáhlt” (Elect) which is printed twice above his name. The piece is also dated with a “III” representing the month of March along with the day of the election “13” and the year “1932.” This presidential election was the second and final direct election to the office of President of the Reich. The incumbent president, Paul von Hindenburg, had been elected in 1925 but his 7-year term expired in May. After 2 rounds of voting, the first as per the date of 13 March shown on this item and April 10th, Hindenburg was re-elected to a second term, his major opponent in the election was Adolf Hitler of the Nazi Party. Following his re-election, Hindenburg played an important role in the coming to power of the Nazis reluctantly appointing Hitler as Chancellor of Germany in Jan., 1933. Hindenburg died in 1934 and then Hitler abolished the office and replaced it with the new position of Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor. Front of the badge has 3 small tarnish marks each about 1/8” long. Rest of luster is Exc. Historic and Rare.
