Item Description
1-3/16x1.25” finely made brass badge with applied silver luster skull featuring black enamel accents for the eyes, nose and mouth. Inscription in black enamel below reads “Kiai O Kalewa.” This unit was originally created on Hawaii in 1919 as the 2nd Observation Group. The official code of arms was adopted in 1924 with the death’s head symbolizing the wartime role of the Air Forces and the Hawaiian motto refers to 2 mythological birds known as the Guardians Of The Upper Regions. The words may also have served as a battle cry among ancient Hawaiian warriors. This is an original issue with faint back stamp reading “A.S. Dondero/Washington, D.C.” Microscopic luster lots off the silvering of the skull but it retains its nice all-over silvery finish and the brass areas are essentially Mint.
