Item Description
1.25” with NYC maker’s name on curl Benj. Harris Co. Button has initials “S-C-M-W-A” which stand for the group State, County & Municipal Workers of America. This was a left-wing labor union which in 1937 broke away from the union AFSCME to join the C.I.O. Many of its members favored the ideals of the Communist Party U.S.A. The button also includes “V” for victory and text “Beat The Axis/Buy Bonds/Welfare Local.” The reference to “Welfare” is because most of the union members were social agency caseworkers. Also see related item #902. Essentially Mint and comes with Hake’s COA. A tiny speck on the “B” of the word “Buy” has been removed. Rare.
