Item Description
In Auction #200, we had a version of this button with the word “Steeplechase” above the character’s head and with the words “Funny Place” across the lower portion of the button. That example should have had a backpaper c. 1897 with name of button jobber W.F. Miller of NYC. In spite of the missing paper, that button realized nearly $700. This example features the same design but the text has been rearranged to surround the iconic image. This 7/8” version has a backpaper by the Bastian Bros. company of Rochester which was first introduced in 1907. Cello has a virtual pinpoint dot center right on the bkg. missing a little of the gloss but this is exceedingly trivial and all else about the button comes close to being virtually Mint. From the Richard Merkin Collection. Comes with Hake’s COA.
