Item Description
2x2.75” flexible tan leather with front flap holding large portrayal of the Yellow Kid with one giant match in right hand and with left hand holding second match resting on his shoulder. Text reads “Match Me If Ye Can.” Flap lifts up to reveal large oval emery board-like striker for matches. Left and right edges have fine stitching so that this piece along with the back cover form a compartment to hold matches. Stitching has left go on about 1” of each left and right top edges. Reverse of the piece has gold imprint showing winged wheel resting on clouds with text above and below “Bartholomay’s Màrzen/Apollo." Tiny bit of surface leather loss above and below the image but quite minor and overall the piece remains extremely clean. c. 1896 and the only example we’ve seen.
