Item Description
1”enamel on brass badge with center portraits of characters “Eb’-Flo’” plus surrounding text naming “Cheery Coons Club” and British publication “The People.” Haughton, following WWI, did editorial cartoons for Punch and the London Mail and then in 1926 joined the London publisher Odhams Press. This was his first comic strip based on the minstrel concept. By 1930 he was creating artwork for the famed German-made Mickey and Minnie motorcycle toy along with a number of other German-produced Mickey Mouse mechanical toys, among the rarest and most collectible Disneyana pieces. Haughton’s next assignment was creating the first Mickey Mouse Annual released for Christmas, 1930 but dated for 1931. He continued to do work for these annuals throughout the 1930s. Tiny bit of brass luster loss mostly at upper left but piece retains perfect enamel and much glossy luster. Marked on the reverse for the maker “Roden/London.” VF. Historic. About the third we’ve seen.
